At James Scott Associates, we’re often asked to deliver projects that look simple on the surface but require careful coordination behind the scenes. This refurbishment of a leisure centre’s gym and dance studio is a good example focused on improving performance, durability, and user experience in high-traffic spaces.
Getting the Basics Right
Before any work began, a full site inspection was essential. Understanding the building, its structure, and existing services allowed the contractor to plan the works properly and avoid issues once on site. This early-stage diligence is key to keeping projects on programme and within budget.
A Fresh Start for the Dance Studio
The dance studio was stripped back to its base, with the existing flooring removed to expose the sub-floor. Proper preparation at this stage ensures the new finish performs as intended over the long term.
A new slip-resistant vinyl floor was installed; hard-wearing, easy to maintain, and well-suited to a busy studio environment. Large, toughened mirrors with bevelled edges were fitted to enhance both usability and the overall feel of the space.
Behind the scenes, all existing sub-floor cabling, including power and data connections, was safely removed and made compliant. New energy-efficient lighting was installed, and the space was fully redecorated to create a brighter, more modern environment. Stud partitions were also introduced to improve the layout and functionality of the studio.
Upgrading the Free-Weights Areas
Within the sports hall, both the existing and new free-weights areas were upgraded.
The original carpeted surface was removed, an important step, as carpet is not suitable for heavy-use gym environments. Sub-floors were prepared before installing robust, purpose-designed gym flooring capable of withstanding impact and heavy loads.
Mirrors were installed to support training, and the areas were redecorated to provide a clean, cohesive finish across the space.
Delivering in a Live Environment
With the leisure centre remaining operational throughout, the works had to be carefully managed. Work areas were securely segregated, and all activities were carried out in line with current health and safety requirements to protect both staff and the public.
Minimising disruption while maintaining progress was a key priority and one that required close coordination between all parties involved.
A Collaborative Effort
Projects like this rely on strong collaboration. We would like to thank Wyre Council for the opportunity to deliver this scheme, the YMCA staff for their cooperation and flexibility while works were ongoing, and Ellis and York for their work in delivering the project on site.
The Result
The end result is a set of upgraded, durable spaces that are fit for purpose and built to last. By focusing on both the visible finishes and the underlying structure, the project provides a practical, long-term improvement for the facility and its users.
